Joy and fitness are two words that often do not seem like they would go together. But today's guest has walked a hard journey to teach and to help others to know this is absolutely possible.
Stephanie:Stay tuned.
Announcer:If your desire is to become spiritually stronger, emotionally healthier and relationally smarter, you're at the right place. Speaker and writer Stephanie Smith inspires and equips you to achieve these three key aims.
If you're a parent, you also learn how to raise empowered kids ready for adulthood. Let's get started.
Stephanie:Welcome listeners. You are in for an absolute treat today. This is the first part of my interview with Christine Trimp.
She has a remarkable story and is going to encourage us to as we look at our holistic health. And she doesn't write and speak about this from the perspective of someone who's had an easy path. Oh no, no, no. Just the opposite.
And it's especially privileged to release this episode today because it's also when Christine's brand new book is being released today, you're going to want to make sure to check out the show notes so that you can know where to go and order a copy for yourself. So without any further ado, let's get started.
Stephanie:Welcome back to the Lives Key 3 episode. I am delighted that you are with me today and you are in for a double treat. First of all, I have a guest with me today and today.
Yes, you heard that right folks. Today is the release day of her brand new book and it could not come at a better time. My guest today is Christine Trimp.
She is a multi award award winning author, a speaker, a certified health and wellness coach and the list could go on and on.
And she is releasing a new book and before I tell you the title of it, I want to stop and just address what's going to become the elephant in the room.
Christine Trimp:Here we are.
Stephanie:It's the beginning of a brand new year and January. And yes, we still look at having those or thinking we should have those New Year's goals.
And one of the most frequent goals that people set in January of a new year is to get in shape that might be adopting an exercise regimen, it might be losing weight, it might be changing their nutritional habits.
And unfortunately statistics show that the number of people who start on one of those journeys doesn't come close to the number of people who actually end up completing that journey.
And one of the things that I love about Christine, I've had the privilege of meeting her in person is she is the real deal and she has come through an amazing journey.
So if, if you're a woman and you're kind of like me, and maybe at different points in your life, I don't know, could just be me who really didn' want to hear a whole lot about weight loss and health from somebody who had been bouncing around in crop tops and yoga pants since they were 14 years old and never knew what it was to struggle with anything, then you are going to be at ease because you're going to know that she knows firsthand what it is to go through a significant transformation. And out of that, she is now committed to helping other people. But it's a whole lot more than just about weight loss.
This is a story and a message about living in freedom. So, Christine, thank you. Welcome to today's podcast.
Christine Trimp:Thank you for having me, Stephanie. I am overjoyed to be here with.
Stephanie:You and your new book releases today. How exciting is that? And so all of the listeners, it's kind of like you just get invited to crash a party here.
And the best way to crash it is you're going to have to go order the book. And so that information will be in the show notes. But the book is titled Sugar Freed. Stop Losing the Weight Loss Battle, Start Gaining the Victory.
And I'm guessing that most of us have come through the holidays and we have encountered sugar more, more than once. Right. So this is definitely a, a timely message, you know, for us.
So, Christine, can you just share a little bit of your journey from what it was to be weighed down by sugar addiction to becoming this certified health and wellness coach?
Christine Trimp:Hey, Stephanie, I would love to, I love how you set it up. As I have never been someone as a 14 year old bouncing around in athletic clothes, being a super athlete or a fitness nut or anything like that.
In fact, I carried obesity. I was overweight, eventually obese, eventually morbidly obese. Starting about the age of 19 when I went away to college.
I did have a few years in my childhood that I was a chubby child when puberty began setting in at a very early age for me. But as soon as I went away to college, that's really when my battle began. And it really, truly has been a lifelong battle for me.
And it's a battle that I, I still walk every single day because as a recovering sugar addict, food addict, carb addict, food idolater, as a being in recovery, it's that, that daily surrender, that daily showing up that I have to lay down every day at the feet of Jesus because let's face it, we have to eat. And as you already said we are surrounded by food that doesn't nourish us. Well, and my story, yes, I love to talk about weight loss.
The weight loss is amazing. It's a wonderful benefit. God gifts us this when we put in the hard work.
But the real story is the freedom and the greater joy in living our healthiest and our best self for the Lord. I always say when we show up, God shows off.
And I hope by sharing my story today that really will inspire anyone listening, even if they don't need a weight loss story. We all carry something heavy.
We're all carrying some, trying to climb mountains and carrying these heavy things, and we can, you know, surrender those. I have to daily surrender my food choices to the Lord. So that's why I love to share and I'm so grateful to be here.
Stephanie:Oh, well, I am thrilled that you are here. So one of the things in your title here is sugar free. So what can you tell us specifically about.
I know you've used the phrase sugar shackles, which, by the way, I love that phrase. I think that's just brilliant. And so can you explain what do you mean by that and how does that really impact our physical health?
Christine Trimp:Yes, well, this is specifically more directly for women like me who tried all of the things for so many years. We followed the dietary dogma, I call it now, like, they eat less, move more, count your calories, everything in moderation. Right.
So I did that for 30 years.
Stephanie and I lived in a yo yo dieting cycle because I would do so well for so long, and then I would fall off the wagon and go back to my old eating patterns. And it was because I had this sugar addiction, which, by the way, is a brain disease. Sugar is highly addictive.
So when I think about the journey that I went through in releasing this weight when I launched on my quitting sugar journey, eventually landed on a ketogenic lifestyle with intermittent fasting. I can picture those chains just breaking off of me bit by bit.
Because it's not just, you know, the matter of being overweight or being, in my case, morbidly obese that I was shedding the pounds. I was literally shedding so much weight from my. My whole life journey.
The weight of guilt, the weight of shame, the weight of disgrace, the weight of always feeling like a failure. Like I was a professional career woman.
But I never defined myself as professional because I felt like I had this one thing in my life that I could never get right. So what God revealed to me when I finally decided to show up and Let him show off through my journey is that I do have a metabolism.
And I'm sorry to any of you out there that have a metabolism like me, but hopefully you get some good, good nuggets here that can get you on the, on the straight path. But my metabolism, I cannot tolerate. You can say I'm carbohydrate intolerant.
And sugar grains, flowers, starchy vegetables, those are all loaded with sugar. And as soon as I learned that secret, that was like the key to unlocking my obesity.
So I just started cleaning up what I was putting in my mouth, eliminated the sugars, the grains, the starches, the flowers, and really that's when the weight loss magic just took off.
So for anybody that's like me, you know, maybe that gives you some, some good food for thought on something you may not have tried, because I didn't try that for 30 years. I had never, never even heard the word ketogenic. Low carb, intermittent fasting for health reasons. I like that.
It was just a foreign concept to me, and it was definitely a gift that the Lord gave me when I finally did land on that.
Stephanie:So you, you make it sound kind of simple there. Kind of like once you, once you recognize, oh, this is all a problem, I'll just toss that all out of my house.
Christine Trimp:Right, right.
Stephanie:Yes, right. And I, I know it was not that, that simple.
And so you, you mentioned about being able to recognize patterns and whether that is with yo yo diet, dieting, that becomes a pattern. And so we have these, they're not just physical patterns. They become these mental patterns in our minds.
And in order to change physically, we have to first begin what we change with what we are thinking. So how did you go about changing that mindset and changing those patterns?
Because it wasn't just as quick and easy as you kind of made it sound right there. Right, right.
Christine Trimp:It's so easy to say it. It's so easy to say, quit sugar and your health is going to change. It's a entirely different matter to step it out every day, especially when we're.
For those of us that are on some level addicted to sugar, either we're a harmful user or a pathological user. And we're used to comforting ourselves with sugar and our brain is screaming at us for more sugar. So, yes, it is. Definitely.
I always tell my coaching clients the mindset work is going to be the most difficult part of this journey.
And also the spiritual growth and the spiritual journey is, can be difficult for some because they're not in a, in a Good habit or a good discipline or taking delight in, in diving into God's word every day for what he calls us to. So I love to encourage women.
That's the most important part of my coaching is getting them in the word of God and having them open their eyes to see what, how he calls us to care for our health. And that's where like the mindset work can really come into play too.
Because just taking, dedicating that time to seeking what God has for us in our whole health, our holistic health, our physical health, emotional health, our spiritual health, body, mind, soul, soul work. And you know, there's tons of scripture about how to care for our bodies and Paul often writes about what to do with all these thoughts we have.
And oh boy, do we have a ton of thoughts about our health, about our failures, about, you know, the guilt and the shame that we've been carrying.
But it really is Stephanie, I coach and I have this practice that every day I dive into God's word and I really, truly I have this practice of surrender and sacrifice. Sacrifice and it being a journey of sanctification, I'm not going to get this right every single day.
We're, we're imperfect beings that, but we know when God puts something in our hearts.
And the women that I work with, it's very evident that God is putting something very strong on their hearts about taking back control of their health. So it is a daily, a daily grace we have to give ourselves to. And the, yeah, the mindset work. I, a whole third of my book is about the mindset work.
So it is, it is very deep, deep, deep soul work that we have to do to get our minds in the right frame. But I will add this, I know it is, does sound so simple to say just quit sugar and it's going to be so much easier.
But what I have discovered looking back on my journey and in helping women approach this for their health is that what we're putting in our mouths is a choice that we can make every single day.
And I know it's hard to think about it, but once you start choosing whole and nutritious, nutrient rich foods, focusing on protein, healthy fats, believe it or not, you're gonna, those cravings are going to start quieting.
Like the cravings that you have for sugar and junk food, the things that lead you astray, that make you fall off the wagon time and time again, it really does begin to quiet in your brain. And so once we get that physical part right of what we're putting in Our, in our body, then that's when the mindset work can really begin kicking in.
So it's kind of a step by.
Stephanie:Step thing as well, because we are triune. We are a body, a soul and a spirit and they do work together. It's not just like, oh, my body's this, this thing that carries my spirit around.
It's, it's like my spirit interacts with my body and my body also impacts my mind, my spirit and, and all that. So we're very integrated. And sometimes I don't know that we have really looked at health in a holistic way.
And I know that word can be a little scary for some people because they can associate that with new age stuff or whatever.
But we're talking about it being in integrated way where we, we recognize and affirm and see the stewardship as we are this, this triune creature affected by, you know, what we eat. And also what we eat is going to impact what we think, you know. So one of the things that.
Couple things that you mentioned there, I just want to follow up on, you talked about the practice of surrender and that this is a daily grace. Now I'm just going to say there are some things that I'm still kind of arguing with God over.
Kind of like, why does this have to be such a daily thing? Like, could we just not make a decision and be one and done with this for like six months? Yeah. Really? Why?
The dailiness of life can kind of wear us down.
Sometimes we can go through those big events and seasons and, and, and things and it's like, okay, we can kind of rise to the challenge, but then we have just this dailyness. So what does that practice of surrender and living out that daily grace, what does that kind of look like for you?
And some practical ways and just anything, any kind of practical steps that you might be able to just share with listeners. So they're like, okay, what does a practice of surrender actually look like?
Christine Trimp:Yes, it's, it is a daily thing like you mentioned. And sanctification is such a big word.
And it's something that at the end of a sanctification journey, we are not going to arrive until we're in heaven. Right. So that is why we have to show up daily, daily in obedience to the Lord.
First and foremost, for me, is because I know that he has given me this story and you may have a different type of story, but the Lord has created each and every one of us uniquely for a purpose. I am fully convinced of that. And I know now that this is my purpose, is to share about holistic health and wellness. And so I have that.
I have to be very diligent about it.
And the way I set my tone every day, which I encourage all of my coaching clients to do as well, and anybody listening right now is to set aside that time to set the tone for your day with the Lord.
And just today I was in Psalm: , and then Psalm:And when it comes to someone who needs to be on a health and wellness journey to improve their health, we're going to have that battle every single day, because, again, we have to eat. So just setting daily habits. I always say that when we set small daily habits, build and deliver big results.
And again, that's where part of the grace comes in, too.
Like, we're not going to perfect this every single day, but each day, if we can take away a lesson that we've learned about surrender, like, Lord, what do you mean? I get to go to a birthday celebration, my granddaughter's birthday celebration. I'm not going to have a piece of cake.
Well, I'm not gonna have a piece of cake on my granddaughter's birthday. I don't have grandchildren yet, but I'm just imagining in the future I do.
I might have a piece of birthday cake on my birthday, but I'm not gonna have a piece of birthday cake on Uncle Joe's birthday, Aunt Sally's birthday, my granddaughter's birthday, your birthday, Stephanie. It's just that's the type of thing that we really have to, like, have this resolve. And the Lord grows this resolve and resiliency through momentum.
I have found momentum in, in the journey, especially in my coaching clients that are actively losing weight. I'm like, cling to that, carry that momentum with you. We set goals, plan all the things that we hear about. You know, this is.
This is how to, you know, live life more freely and less stress. And it applies. All of that applies to a weight loss journey as well, too. So carry the Momentum.
Actually, when I speak, when I speak publicly, I have an acronym that I love to share with the audience.
And it's based on what David writes in Psalm 47, where he writes, you have filled my heart with greater joy than when their grain and new wine abound. And for us, in a weight loss journey, we can use the grain and new wine literally, right?
Other people can use it symbolically for something else that. That some earthly thing that is filling you with joy.
Well, as a recovering food addict and a food idolater, you know, brain and new wine used to give me a lot of pleasure. And so that's something I had to surrender. But this greater joy that David is writing about here is a true heart transformation.
And the heart transformation involves our emotions, our thoughts, motivation, courage, and of course, taking action, because nothing is going to change in our life unless we take action. And seeking God at His word, seeking wisdom, understanding, knowledge, what he has for us. I had no idea.
Well, I had a little bit of idea, but I was in denial for years because I knew I wasn't getting this one part of my life right. I just could not get my health right.
And so I would skim over the parts where, you know, it's really written in His Word, how to care for our body, how to care for our whole health. Body, mind, soul, spirit, heart. It's all there.
And now I say, like, my Bible is the best guidebook I had for all those years that was just collecting dust on my nightstand until I. That's another huge thing that changed in my life is that he put a resolve in my heart. I started feeling better.
I started picking up my Bible every single day. Haven't put it down since. And that's really, truly where the transformation comes in.
Stephanie:I love that you talk about that, because the Word of God is unlike anything else that has ever been written. There is a power in that. And it's.
It's not a book of formulas and guaranteed outcomes that if you do X, you'll get Y in the sense that we manipulate God or we function like. Like machines.
But there are absolutely principles there that do lead us into places of growth and health, physically, emotionally, relationally, spiritually, if we choose to align with those principles. And the reality is that we can suffer if we choose not to align with those. And yet at this, at the same time, you know, the.
The reality also is that we do have to eat, and we can't just eat our Bibles. So, you know, and.
And one of the things, one of the stories that I, to me, is both an encouraging and a sobering story in scripture is when the Israelites had, were done wandering around in the wilderness, you know, for the 40 years, and during that time God had divinely delivered food right outside their door. All they had to do was go out and pick it up.
But the day that they crossed over the Jordan river and they come into the promised land, that divine delivery stops.
Because now it's a matter that God is saying, you now possess the capacity to provide for your own selves, therefore I'm going to expect you to do that.
And there were probably some people that were not real happy about that change in plans and kind of wanted the whole divine delivery thing, you know, to keep going on.
But there is something about our, our health, not just physically, but our, our spiritual health and who we become as a person that God wants to grow us up so that we will do what we have the capacity to do. There is something about living from an empowered place that changes us not just in one area, you know, but in several.
So for someone who, who was listening to this that says, I'm already reading my Bible, Christine, I, I, I have a genuine love for God. This is still a tremendous struggle for me. What's something beyond just reading my Bible? Where, what's the next step? Where, where do I go with this?
When, when I am sitting down and it's my granddaughter's birthday and the giant cake is in front of me and she's one, she's handing me a piece of cake, you know, or all of the other situations that we find ourselves in, whether it's regular meals or it's special occasions or we're tired, we're frustrated, we're upset, we're lonely, and the refrigerator is calling. Yeah, right.
What are some other steps then that somebody could add to their toolkit once they have first done the specific step of just being in God's word?
Christine Trimp:Yes, I love that question. Thank you. I am constantly reminding my clients and myself that we have to know ourselves and our patterns, our behaviors.
How did I get in this situation to begin with? And again, this is where the deep soul searching work comes into play.
Because when I was a hundred pounds overweight and if we had sat down and had a conversation, I would not have said I'm a hundred pounds overweight because I'm addicted to sugar, I'm addicted to food, I'm addicted to carbs. As a matter of fact, food is my idol. I would never have said that to you, Stephanie. I would have babysit.
You know, I've been trying everything in moderation, and I feel like that's giving me permission to eat five meals a day, five to six meals a day. That is keeping my blood sugar unhealthy, my insulin hormone unhealthy. I didn't know any of that.
Stephanie, it really does take a dedication to understanding how you got in this place in the first. Like, how did you get here? How did I get here? And then also, why do I want to get out of this situation?
And, you know, Lord, again, surrendering it, laying it at the cross. And my pattern of behavior, Stephanie, was for so many years, I would step up to it and I would lay it down.
And then when something in my life got difficult, I would go and I would snatch it back up, you know, so that was a pattern of behavior. And yes, it is so hard to bust these patterns of behavior.
But I, I, I, I'm so grateful that God has helped me see myself in a new light as a, like one of his chosen children, given me a hunger and a thirst for his Word. And you can, and I encourage my coaching clients to pray for that too. Like, you might just be in a, in a dry season of time with the Lord.
eat the Word, but in Jeremiah:And I, I no longer eat bread, but I consume the bread of life. And that really is what satisfies and what satiates.
And, and again, I don't, I'm, I very cautious about making this sound easy for anybody, especially women who are in the Word. But it's just taking a full, taking a full inventory or a full evaluation of ourselves. Like, we love to celebrate with food.
I mean, can I mention a church potluck without anybody throwing food at me? Like, we love it.
Stephanie:We.
Christine Trimp:We love it. We love it. We love our church potlucks. We love to see what, you know, the Myers brought or the Smiths brought.
You know, we love to see all that kind of stuff. But why, why do we love food so much? That's the, that's the heart of the matter. That's the hard question.
And is that food that you love so much, is it destroying your health? So those are a couple of serious questions that we could ask ourselves. And for me, yes, my diet, high in carbohydrates, was destroying my Health.
And I could do a program like a Weight Watchers program. I could follow the program so well, Stephanie.
But what I learned is that even the whole wheat bread that I was eating and the potato that I was still eating or the pasta, whole wheat pasta, I can't, I can't have those because I, again, I'm carbohydrate intolerant. It just contributed to my insulin resistance. Insulin is your fat storing hormone, my friends hate to tell you that, but it's true.
So a lot, lot of evaluation, awareness and taking action on what we can do to try something new. Try something new.
Stephanie:Yeah. So if somebody has been on the, on, you know, where they have been putting in efforts on other things and they are not working.
Stephanie:Right, right.
Stephanie:Then again, rather than continuing to read those patterns, repeat those patterns and just hope, you know, for a different outcome, you know, one of the things that you have been brave enough to mention more than once, you've used the phrase idolatry or food being an idol. Good for you. I'm glad you're saying that and not me.
Christine Trimp:Yes, right, exactly.
Stephanie:And this is one of those areas in, in the Christian space where I'm not qualified to speak because I don't have your journey.
And so I have, I mean, I've had, you know, my issues with needing to lose smaller amounts of weight, but in, in all honesty, throughout my life, I have never had a serious weight issue.
Stephanie:Good.
Stephanie:Part of that was probably growing up in a farm and we worked so much that there wasn't any way to be able to gain too much weight.
And, and honestly, I kind of joke about that, but the reality is that what children experience growing up and the, what their body learns is something that has an impact on them even into adulthood.
And our science is showing more and more that children, it's not just if they develop appetites for junk food, it's actually if they, especially if they, at early ages develop obesity. It becomes much harder for them as adults to change that than someone who, who does not have that to begin with.
So this is not just about ourselves as individuals, but going. It's also about what we are teaching our children and the role model that we are setting for them. But you've, you've used this, this phrase idolatry.
And I wonder if you can just kind of dive into a little bit because I can understand just being able to relate to other issues in my life that I've had to deal with, where sometimes you can almost fear going to God's word, you can almost fear Reaching out for help because there's that sense of failure, there's that sense of shame.
There's an identity in place, and you can feel like I've, you know, I've tried so many different ways to address this, and it's not getting any better. So can you just speak to that person right now who's listening, who. Who says, I. I would like to be different in this area, but I am exhausted.
I've tried so many things. I. I don't have people in my corner.
Maybe the person who actually is surrounded by other people who are sabotaging their efforts because that can happen, or if they start trying to make some changes, let's just be honest, Everybody isn't going to rally around them and say, good for you.
Christine Trimp:Right?
Stephanie:Somebody can show up with the whole plate of cookies and go, oh, well, you know, just have a few, you know, kind of a deal. So can you speak to that person about identity, about how. How do they deal with the.
The shame that they may still be carrying and the fear that that can create?
Christine Trimp:Oh, my goodness, you just had a whole bunch in there that I want to address. First of all, let me just say something about the food idolatry. And really, it's a coping mechanism.
Like, what I did was a coping mechanism because I was ashamed, because I was sad, because I felt isolated, because I felt rejected, because I didn't feel like I belonged. And I never felt like I fit in a whole lot of places.
Like, physically, Stephanie, I barely fit into an airplane seat, you know, and I was on the verge of having to get that seatbelt extender. I was scared to try to fit into roller coaster rides. I mean, that was the physical part of it.
But I never felt like I belonged in a room of, like, the rooms that we gather in now together, when we're together for speakers, events and stuff. I never felt like it belonged. So I was comforting myself. I was coping with all of those emotions with food.
And it was giving me, you know, a quick dopamine hit. That was something I felt like I could control, and it was very much out of control. And I actually write a lot about the food idolatry in my book.
There's several chapters dedicated to this where I go on a much deeper dive about it. But, you know, we talk about the sins of commission and the sins of omission.
Like, going back to what if I had been picking up my Bible, I may have received some better instruction on how to care for my body, right? But I was not doing that. So. And there's, there's so many sins of omission. Other things besides just using food as an idol, right.
There's, you know, excessive shopping, people, pornography, like sex addiction, all kinds of things that can be considered a coping mechanism. So there's that.
And then to address what you talked about, the people in our lives, this is a really challenging part of our journey too because we are so good at self sabotage and we have the saboteurs around us too. People don't want to see us succeed when they have their own insecurities about their own personal health and wellness. They're carrying obesity.
So it is a battle. But the one thing that I have discovered in putting together my group coaching program is the empowerment in community and Christian fellowship.
And we can come there, we can share everything, anything. We have tears, we have drama. We, we, we show up authentically and vulnerably and we get each other. We've all been in the same situation.
I know what somebody who is carrying an extra 70 pounds feels like. I know what somebody that's carrying an extra hundred pounds like I did. I know what they feel like. 30 pounds, 15 pounds, whatever.
Women have a tendency to feel so bad about themselves when their genes are too snug. And it's just, you know, it's just part of life. It doesn't, you know, we need to overcome it. We can, we can be victorious. Overcome it.
That's why my subtitle is gain your victory. Gain the victory. Right? It's possible. It's possible. So those are just things, many things to be aware of. The your self sabotage.
We need to stop snatching it back up when we lay it down. We're so good at that. And then being surrounded by saboteurs.
